Blog Entry #7

Think about what you have learned about standards as it relates to your Service Learning Placement.  What evidence of the standards being addressed do you observe in your placement? Are there particular subject matter standards that seem to be given more emphasis than others?
In my service learning placement, I would probably say that I see Math being taught most often. However, the only reason I say this is because, on the days that I don’t come all day and only come for part of the day, this is what they’re doing during that time I'm there. On the days that I am there all day I do see my teacher going through all of the different topics. Math, science, English, reading, etc. and during the week there are certain times during the day that students will go to different places/classroom in the school to complete things such as fine arts, physical education, health education, and library. Also at my school, we have a lot of students who don’t speak English as their first language so often students will get pulled out to go to a speech therapist where they help them with better learning how to speak English as well as other speech difficulties they said might be having.

What are the subjects that you are not seeing addressed?  Why do you think that is?
One thing I never saw in my placement was social studies. I personally never had classes where it was called "social studies" when I was in elementary school. It was just called History, which I think is fairly similar. I’m sure that there are certain times that they do talk about history but I personally have never observed this. I think maybe the reason why is because they don’t start teaching history around fourth grade which is where my placement is as well as the curriculum might be more complicated now and so they’re revising how they want to teach it.

How does your cooperating teacher feel about the standards and about standardized testing?

My cooperating teacher said that she’s OK with standardized testing, but it can often be a lot of trouble. She says that she does think it’s necessary in some cases but other times maybe not so much. We didn’t have a lot of time to talk about this subject so that was the main feedback that I got.
